Washoe County is responsible for maintaining our roadways and walkways, with the exception of SR28 for which the state is responsible. Last winter, community member and President of Incline Village Crystal Bay Community 1st, Sara Schmitz reached out to the Assistant County Manager to identify solutions to the delayed snow clearing of our village walkways. She worked to connect a local business interested in providing the services. The Assistant County Manager preferred the solution of the county budgeting for more equipment and staff to clear the walkways as roads are being cleared, not weeks later. As a reminder, the walkways have been classified as priority 4 for snow removal, which is why their clearing is often delayed by weeks after a snowstorm. By not having walkways cleared as roads are cleared, many pedestrians, including children, are often walking on the snow and ice covered roadways.
The problem has yet to have been solved. Residents have reported this year’s clearing hasn’t appeared to have changed from winter’s past. Sara Schmitz reached out to the county to inquire if perhaps the budget wasn’t approved or what the issue was since there appears to have been no change from our walkways being priority 4.
Commissioner Hill responded by thanking the community for their interest in the winter operations and she would welcome an opportunity to attend an upcoming IVGID Board of Trustees town hall. The next town hall is anticipated to be scheduled in June, after the county submits its budget for 2024/25.
