August 31, 2021 Placer County Supervisors extended the moratorium on issuing new STR permits until March 31, 2022 to allow for further study of the negative impacts on East Placer communities (Alpine Meadows, Carnelian Bay, Homewood, Kings Beach, Olympic Valley, Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista, etc.). The presentation includes a comparison to other mountain resort communities across the west. The presentation may be viewed by clicking here. Findings from their analysis, found on page 28 of 30, are summarized below:
Placer data show STRs have negative effects in Placer County
• The extension of the moratorium was in response to findings that STRs have “exacerbated the housing crisis in the Tahoe region: an increase in second home-ownership; a loss of long-term rentals; and a significant and increasing workforce housing shortage.”
• “There is growing concern regarding the preservation of neighborhood character/integrity and STR nuisances, including noise, disturbances, traffic, and parking.”
• In addition the staff recommended the extension because of the “current and immediate threat to the public health, safety, and welfare associated with proliferation of STRs.”
